Diversity & Inclusion: Why it matters now more than ever

Posted

When Leona Allen was appointed deputy publisher of The Dallas Morning News this summer with responsibility for diversity and inclusion across the company, the newspaper made the commitment to "walk the walk" in making the company more inclusive of the community it serves.   Gannett also made headlines recently with its commitment to achive gender, racial and ethnic parity with its communities by 2025.  And, Corinne Chin is the founder and leader of newsroom’s Diversity & Inclusion Task Force at The Seattle Times.

Thursday morning during PIVOT will be devoted to discussions of how newspapers across the country can ensure that their organizations are meeting expectations for diversity, inclusion and equality.  Our presenters will be talking about how those commitments will impact content and product plans, as well as financial and social aspects of the business.

Our presenters are:

  • Mizell Stewart III, a lifelong journalist and community servant with a passion for transforming organizations and lives for the better. Today, he is a news executive for Gannett and the USA TODAY Network and an adjunct faculty member at The Poynter Institute for Media Studies.
  • Leona Allen, deputy publisher of The Dallas Morning News. She previously was a member of the paper's editorial board.
  • Corinne Chin, a senior video journalist at The Seattle Times.

This opening session will be followed by a discussion about "The 3 Pillars of a Strong News Company" and how hiring, retention and promotion are important for healthy news organizations.  Presented by Doris Truong, director of training and diversity of The Poynter Institute, this session will look at how a diverse workforce will serve diverse audiences — something that is essential for business and journalism success.  Truong will explore ways to keep the hiring pipeline flowing.
